Description including Unit Aims

The Teaching Unit comprises 3 Elements: 1. Orthodontics 2. Clinical Orthodontics 3. Paediatric Dentistry In the clinical part of the BDS programme, students learn the care of child patients in orthodontics - the management of the developing dentition - and paediatric dentistry - the whole oral care of child patients from birth to around 16 years of age. In addition, students will study orthodontics in its own right - the management of malocclusion for patients of all ages. These subjects are taught alongside each other in the timetable with recognition, wherever possible, of their complementary nature. As their earliest contact with the Unit, students undertake a course of visits to schools where they provide oral health promotion to children in small groups, based on provided and well-rehearsed materials. Subsequently, students follow a programme of lectures and tutorials as an introduction to the knowledge base and practicalities of the two disciplines before beginning clinical practice in term 3 of year 3. A programme of tutorials follows until the end of year 5 term 1; clinical practice sessions within the Dental School are integrated, with teachers in both disciplines present on the same session. In the last term of year 4 and the first two terms of year 5, students additionally attend and treat patients in the Charlotte Keel Clinic as a part of the "ground floor rotation".
