The unit focuses on the skills required for reading, speaking and listening in an English academic environment. Students will look at the lexis and overall structure of academic English and there will be weekly lectures by guest speakers to give the students practice in listening to various kinds of speakers, accents, and lecturing styles which will provide a real-life opportunity for contextualised note-taking practice. A great emphasis will be placed on the media, text analysis, cohesion and coherence and text signalling devices. Students will participate in assessed seminars to enable them to learn to take an active part in discussions and they will learn to ask critical questions to analyse and evaluate given information. They will develop their Academic Reading skills to include inferring, predicting, deducing meaning from context, rhetorical structures and the function of reference words.
