The unit examines the classical and emergent approaches to strategic management in order to provide a thorough introduction to current thinking on the subject. Attention is paid to the relationship between strategic management and organisational learning, values and change, and to differing contexts and situations within which strategy is developed. The syllabus includes the key phases of the strategy process, including: understanding the strategic environment; developing strategic options; and selecting and implementing chosen strategies. Alternative perspectives of the strategy process are introduced in order to help students challenge taken-for-granted assumptions and develop their own appreciation of the nature of strategy.
