The aim of this unit is to enable the students to understand the natural and man-made hazards (e.g. earthquakes, tsunami, floods, explosions, accidents, human error) and the risks these pose to nuclear infrastructures and the society at large.
Students will be able to: 1) Demonstrate a good knowledge and understanding of hazards and resilience. 2) Assess how nuclear engineering infrastructure is vulnerable to different natural and man-made hazards. 3) Carry out a qualitative risk analysis and identify measures to improve nuclear infrastructure resilience.
24 1 hour Lectures will be arranged to cover different hazards and risks to infrastructures. Students will supplement these by undertaking wider reading. In total they will be expected to spend 76 hours on independent study including preparation of the final report
Students will be assessed on a case study of the impact of hazards on nuclear infrastructure in real contexts. They will present their findings in the form of a 3000 word report which will make up 100% of the final mark
