Description including Unit Aims

This unit will enable students to pursue a defined and focused specialist practical, historical, methodological, and/or conceptual interest under the guidance of a member of the academic staff. Through this unit, students have the opportunity to explore particular topics in more depth than is offered within existing taught units. Students who are appropriately qualified or trained may develop a practical project as a Supervised Individual Study. Thus, this unit allows greater flexibility within the MA programmes, so that the department can respond to students' special interests.

This unit will enable students to:

  • Identify a suitable topic for a very small-scale independent research project
  • Structure their patterns of study independently
  • Conduct a very small-scale independent study
  • Produce a 5,000 word essay or other appropriate and equivalent documentation, artefact or presentation as agreed with the supervisor.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit students will have:

  • Developed their knowledge and understanding of their particular topic and method of research
  • Have structured their own independent patterns of study
  • Produced a 5,000 word essay or equivalent documentation, artefact or presentation as agreed with the supervisor.

Teaching Information

Individual tutorials (6 hours); guided reading; independent study.
