Description including Unit Aims

This Unit of Teaching will take place in Year 4 terms 1 - 3 and will comprise of the elements of the Oral Disease Course and Orthodontics.

The Oral Disease course will cover the following specialty areas:

Oral Disease

1. Oral Medicine
2. Oral Pathology
3. Dental & Maxillofacial Radiology
4. Special Care Dentistry
5. Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS)

The general aims of this element is to:

1. Impart a theoretical understanding of the range of disorders which affect the teeth, their supporting structures oral mucosa and the surrounding oro-facial tissues and how they are diagnosed and managed.
2. To have awareness of how systemic disease may manifest within the oral cavity and surrounding structures.
3. To have an understanding of how systemic disease may affect the dental management of patients.
4. To have knowledge to manage medical emergencies within the dental surgery.

Orthodontics

1. To develop skills in the collection of the orthodontic clinical data and the formulation of a problem list.
2. To gain knowledge of the correct management of orthodontic appliances and of emergencies that may arise during their use.
3. To improve their ability to inform patients about the scope, nature and requirements of orthodontic treatment.
4. To begin to develop ability to refer patients for an orthodontic opinion at the optimal time and in an optimal fashion.

Conscious sedation

1. To give an experience of conscious sedation
2. The role of IV sedation in patient management
3. Equipment required
4. Skills required for IV sedation
5. Patient assessment and preparation for IV sedation

The patient care pathway for patients managed under IV sedation to include:

1. Drug administration
2. Monitoring
3. Operative working window

Intended Learning Outcomes

Students should obtain a knowledge and understanding of the following:

1. Identify relevant and appropriate dental and oro- facial anatomy and variants.
2. The aetiology and pathogenesis and clinical manifestations of oro-facial diseases and their relevance to prevention, diagnosis and treatment including malignancy.
3. The diagnosis and management of oro facial infections.
4. The role and selection of clinical, radiological, pathology, laboratory investigations and special tests.
5. The standards of record keeping and information governance.
6. Identification and management of medical emergencies.
7. The differential diagnosis of radiolucent, radioapaque and mixed lesions affecting the jaws.
8. The dental management of medically compromised patients.
9. To make appropriate progress towards becoming orthodontically literate and capable as future general dental practitioners.

Teaching Information

The Oral Disease course element will consist of:

1. 21 Oral medicine/Pathology/Radiology/ Special needs lectures
2. 10 Maxillofacial surgery lectures (may change)
3. 3 topic teaching sessions which will be multidisciplinary.
4. 2 student presentation sessions
5. 1 revision small group teaching session

It would be expected that a minimum of 1-2 hours pre-reading and 1-2 hours follow-up reading per lecture/ topic teaching/ tutorial are required and recommended.

Orthodontics

1. Students are directed to read appropriate chapters in the recommended textbooks prior to each individual tutorial

Methods of teaching comprise tutorials and supervised treatment of patients requiring uncomplicated orthodontics. Each student has a 60 minute tutorial in alternate weeks (30 minutes per week) and 60 minutes of patient treatment each week.

Conscious sedation

1. One 3 hour practical introduction session and 4-5 sessions of supervised clinical practice

Assessment Information

Oral Disease

1. Electronic e-Assessment in Year 4 term 2

• Summative 1 hour e-assessment year 4.2 (80% of the Unit mark)

Orthodontics

• The summative assessment will be an e-assessment in term 3. This will last 45 minutes and the questions will be based on the tutorials, corresponding chapters in the core text and on-clinic learning for this element. (20% of the Unit mark)

Conscious sedation

• The assessment of this element will take place as part of the Final Examination at the end of year 5
