Description including Unit Aims

The Unit consists of approximately 20 lectures or workshops that cover more specialised topics and techniques, such as protein folding, ion-channels, molecular simulations and single-molecule techniques (smFRET, total internal reflection microscopy, atomic force microscopy, optical and magnetic tweezers). Teaching is supported by small group tutorials.

Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the Unit the students should be able to describe the experimental techniques in practice and theory, and how they can be applied to studying molecular mechanisms in the life sciences. Students will also understand how these techniques are being used in both an academic and industrial context.

90% of the unit marks are from a two hour exam paper consisting of essay and data handling questions. 10% of the unit marks are from a literature comprehension exercise.
