Description including Unit Aims

This is an optional unit that may be taken instead of the Exploratory Training Project II unit. This unit comprises either a period spent in an industrial placement at one of our partner organisations, or an industry-facing project of direct relevance to our partners.

Work with a company will be guided on a day-to-day basis by a partner supervisor and under the general supervision of an academic supervisor, and completion of a project. The aim of this unit is to provide students with additional knowledge and skills derived from spending a period working with industries and/or facilities as well offering an insight into the use of condensed matter physics and the experience of physicists in a commercial environment. In addition to their knowledge of physics, the partner placement will add the discipline of time-management, individual responsibility within team-working, an understanding of commercial pressures and entrepreneurial skills.

Students will complete a partner project of equivalent standard to that taken by students in the Exploratory Research Project II unit.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  • address new and unfamiliar technical problems,
  • work together in a team to solve a problem,
  • write up or present results.

They will have a demonstrated knowledge and understanding of:

  • an industrial-related research project which has been completed alone or with a partner,
  • the way in which condensed matter physics is used in an industrial or commercial environment,
  • the value of teamwork,
  • improved time-management,
  • the pressures of working within budget and to time,
  • the importance of good communications.

Teaching Information

The unit will run for 6 weeks with students embedded in the partner organisation for the duration. Students will maintain regular contact with the CDT through an academic supervisor (member of the CDT) but work full-time (35+ hours per week) at a placement under the management of a partner supervisor.

Assessment Information

Assessment of the work is on a day-to-day basis by the partner supervisor. Assessment of placement is through a short written report (around 2000 words) due after completion of the placement. Students will be assessed on their written report and day-to-day performance (85%) as well as their contribution to the group work in the partner project (15%). They will be marked by a CDT member of staff who will be partly informed by the partner supervisor.
