This unit will consider the linguistic, literary and cultural aspects of sign language literature and folklore as an essentially oral "face to face" genre. The course considers sign language poetry and narratives, both with reference to the text and the performance, as well as the implications of sign language literature and folklore as a means of empowerment for a minority, essentially oral language and culture. An essential part of the unit will be the in-depth study of the work of Deaf poets and skilled narrators of sign language stories.
