In order to progress in a degree programme with study abroad (and thus spend year three abroad), a candidate is required to demonstrate an adequate attainment in the major subject or subjects (normally obtaining assessment marks of at least 60 in the Level 4 and 60 overall in Level 5 science and maths units).

Co-requisites

None.

Faculty Faculty of Science

Description including Unit Aims

A year spent studying in an approved university abroad with a physics content sufficient to allow the possibility of progression into year 4 of an MSci programme, including distance learning of Core physics units PHYS30021 Solid State Physics and PHYS32011 Quantum Physics.

PHYS32011 is worth 10 credit points and PHYS30021 is worth 20 credit points; the remaining 90 credit points are chosen by the student with the agreement of the School of Physics.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Have a knowledge and understanding of the core physics material from the level 6 MSci physics course at Bristol and be able to solve problems at this level.

Have a knowledge and understanding of further optional physics (or related) units as taught by the partner university and will be able to solve problems related to these courses.

Students will be able to cope with the challenges of living and studying in a foreign country.

Teaching Information

Variable, as teaching is at the partner university.

Assessment Information

The distance learning elements are assessed by open-book written examinations that may be taken remotely.

Formative assessment on the remaining 90 credit points is predominantly carried out by the partner university. The students report on their progress to Bristol and receive feedback. Students also receive formative feedback on the report and the interview.

Summative Assessment on the remaining 90 credit points is comprised of:

  • Assessments by the partner university
  • A written report
  • An interview.

Resources

If this unit has a Resource List, you will normally find a link to it in the Blackboard area for the unit. Sometimes there will be a separate link for each weekly topic.

If you are unable to access a list through Blackboard, you can also find it via the Resource Lists homepage. Search for the list by the unit name or code (e.g. PHYS30022).

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks, independent learning and assessment activity.

See the Faculty workload statement relating to this unit for more information.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit. The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
