Assessment Information

Students are formatively assessed and given feedback for each patient that they treat.

There are set clinical competencies set by the General Dental Council, and Students must complete these competencies during their training in order to be put forward for Finals. Clinical competencies are assessed using the clinical assessment criteria in the codes of practice. All staff teaching on the programme receives training in assessment so there is standardisation across the programme.

If a student is performing at a consistently weak level then students will be given further tutorials on manikin heads.

Summative assessments are carried out at the End of Year exam, where students are required to complete a 1 hour practical periodontal task on a patient, followed by a viva on aspects of patient management. This part of the examination is reliable on patient availability; however there is always a reliable patient base to draw from. Aspects of clinical work are also examined in the End of Year written Examination.

Format for end of year examination:

a) 3 written papers each of 2 hours duration. (30 minutes for each question, 4 compulsory questions)

b) Clinical examination 1 hour practical periodontal assessment of deposit removal.

c) 10 minute viva

d) Adult Restorative Case Presentation - (paper only) Pass mark: 50%

All aspects of this examination are cross marked by external examiners. Re-sits for the examination are scheduled for January of the second year. If a student fails one aspect of the exam either written or practical, they only re-sit that particular aspect. If they fail for the second time they must re-sit all parts of the examination. If the student fails to pass this attempt, the school would recommend that the student withdraw from the course. A third attempt at the examination would have to be approved by the Board of Dental Studies.
