Description including Unit Aims

Complexity is concerned with the behaviour of systems made up of individual components whose overall behaviour is difficult or impossible to discern from a study of just one component. Examples of such systems include mobile phone networks, the brain and molecules where the individual component mobile phone, a neuron and an atom respectively. Existing theory in this area is a synthesis of several older disciplines. This unit is designed to introduce students to the relevant areas of these disciplines, to allow students to see the connections between the disciplines and to become acquainted with the significant number of unsolved problems in Complexity. The material will be delivered in nine 3 week integrated teaching sessions (modules).
