The two units in this level (Latin A1 and A2) are designed for those who have little or no previous knowledge of Latin, and aim to teach students the techniques of reading straightforward Latin texts with the aid of a dictionary and reference grammar. Initially students will be introduced to the workings of an inflected language and the grammatical terms used to analyze it. Where appropriate, the contexts of original Latin passages will also be studied in order to help students place the Latin language in its ancient cultural and literary contexts. During the year students should progress to an intermediate level of proficiency ('AS' level or beyond). Level A1 aims to cover chapters 1-5 of Learn to Read Latin, level A2 to cover chapters 6-10.
Aims:
To teach students the techniques of reading straightforward Latin texts with the aid of a dictionary and reference grammar; to enable students place the Latin language in its ancient cultural and literary contexts; and to read at least 250 lines of Latin, of which at least 150 lines should be un-adapted, original Latin poetry or prose.
Students will have acquired and developed knowledge of the terms and procedures of grammatical analysis; a total vocabulary of about 250 Latin words; and skills in the process of translating straightforward Latin into good English – of which at least 150 lines should be un-adapted, original Latin poetry or prose.
Seminars and reading classes, grammatical instruction classes.
Continuous assessment: 3 class tests (20 % each) and a final comprehensive test of 45 minutes (40 %);assessing grammatical and syntactical knowledge, and ability to analyze syntax and translate sentences from Latin into English. Use of dictionaries will be allowed in tests.
