Database Management Systems (DBMS) are at the heart of most information systems. The unit is structured around the following topics: the relational database model and the entity-relationship model; the principles of database design; aspects of physical database access, including indexing and query optimisation; the principles of the design and implementation of distributed databases; database transactions; client-server database applications; higher-level and extended data models.
