Description including Unit Aims

This unit will complement &Court and City: Early Modern English Literary Responses&, but is also free-standing. Students on this unit will study the literature of England at the very end of the Middle Ages, using texts and contexts outside of the canon generally studied by undergraduates. There will be a particular focus on the court and the city as complementary textual environments. Obvious areas for exploration will include: the reception of Chaucer; the development of a distinctive English vernacular literary culture; responses to, and formulations of authority; satire; occasional and ceremonial performance texts. Authors who will be covered might include: Hoccleve, Lydgate, Dunbar, Douglas, Skelton, Hawes, and James I of Scotland.
