Unit Information

The aim of this unit is to encourage students to explore a contemporary issue in health professional education that is relevant to them, but to explore it in the context of a bigger picture. The intention of this bigger picture approach is to learn from other disciplines and to contextualise issues that arise in professional education.

Aims:

1. To explore contemporary issues in health care professions’ education

2. To contextualise those issues within a ‘big picture’

Your learning on this unit

On completion of this unit learners will have:

1. investigated a contemporary and relevant issue in health professions’ education

2. contextualised the issue in a wider framework (for example, historical or socio-cultural or political)

3. identified implications for practice of resent research on this issues

4. critically read a range of contemporary research and literature

5. presented their findings to peers

6. undertaken peer review and assessment

How you will learn

There will be a mixed method approach consistent with current best practice. This will include presentations by course tutors, large and small group discussions, workshops, individual research activities, demonstrations and presentations by participants with structured feedback.

How you will be assessed

Formative: contribution to discussions, peer and tutor feedback on draft presentations, and peer feedback on draft abstract.

Summative: presentation, 500 word abstract on a negotiated title that reflects the learning outcomes for this unit that draws on relevant research.

Resources

If this unit has a Resource List, you will normally find a link to it in the Blackboard area for the unit. Sometimes there will be a separate link for each weekly topic.

If you are unable to access a list through Blackboard, you can also find it via the Resource Lists homepage. Search for the list by the unit name or code (e.g. MEEDM0029).

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks, independent learning and assessment activity.

See the Faculty workload statement relating to this unit for more information.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit. The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
