Unit Information

Each student will take part in a group project that addresses a course related challenge in robotics. These could be set by either course academics, stakeholder links or cross-disciplinary academic colleagues and developed in the lead-up to the project itself. Each project will be supervised by an academic supervisor. Modelling and simulation are expected, and where possible, hardware development will be encouraged.

Your learning on this unit

On successful completion of the unit students will:

  • Liaise with academic, industry, and non-profit stakeholders to capture key project drivers and requirements.
  • Construct and evaluate system architecture models at appropriate levels of detail to inform analysis.
  • Systematically identify aspects of contextual analysis for the deployment of a new technology: political, economic, social, technological, legal, environmental (PESTLE) and ethical.
  • Synthesize conclusions and recommendations for future project directions.

How you will learn

This unit is primarily experiential. All projects will be supervised by an academic and after an initial introduction to the problem, students will manage their own activities, with weekly supervisory meetings.

How you will be assessed

  • Assessment 1 (20%) - Project pitch: Exploration of application areas / grand challenges. Selection of the challenge to work on and outline of the project plan. (4 pages)
  • Assessment 2 (30%) - State-of-the-art: Report outlining the latest research in the field of the chosen project. (Pages: dependent on group size)
  • Group Presentation or Video for the stakeholders – not formally assessed – but stake holder, peer and academic feedback will be provided.
  • Assessment 3 (50%) - Group project report including the ethical and societal dimensions. (Pages: dependent on group size)

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks, independent learning and assessment activity.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit. The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
