Description including Unit Aims

The aim of this unit is to give students experience of working in a team (up to 6 members) to design, a small digital system using VHDL with modern EDA (Electronic Design Automation) tools and implementing the design in FPGA technology.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On the successful completion of this project activity you will be able to:

  • interpret a specification of a digital system;
  • use EDA simulation, layout and placement tools (eg Modelsim, Xilinx ISE);
  • structure a design into modules and define module interfaces;
  • approach the testing and simulation of a design in a systematic manner;
  • prepare and give a group presentation;
  • assess the performance of yourself and partners through self and peer assessment.
