Description including Unit Aims

To advance to degree standard students’ active and passive ability in the language studied.
To sustain and build on oral fluency and listening skills acquired to date.
To develop students’ writing skills across a range of written tasks.
To perfect students’ skills in translation of texts (from literature and contemporary media).

Intended Learning Outcomes

1. Students will be proficient in the spoken and written language to degree standard.

2. Students will be able to communicate fluently in the spoken language in both formal and informal registers.

3. Students will have a high level of competence in using the written language in a range of tasks.

4. Students will be sensitive to register and nuances of the language studied and will be able to reflect these in translation.

5. Students will be able to demonstrate and reflect on their distinctive linguistic and cultural expertise by exploring its practical application in a range of educational and cultural contexts.

Teaching Information

3 weekly contact hours dedicated to the development of key skills. In each TB, students will also accumulate the equivalent of 2 weekly contact hours contributing to staff-facilitated activities.

Mostly seminar based with some lectures for the delivery of grammar lessons. Ongoing e-learning tasks via Blackboard.

Assessment Information

100% examination – to test the 4 key skills – Translation; Composition; Guided Writing; Oral/Aural:

1½ hour translation exam (25%) – ILOs 1 & 4

1½ hour guided writing exam (25%) – ILOs 1, 3 &4

2-hour composition exam (25%) – ILOs 1, 3 & 4

Oral/aural exam (25%) – 1 oral exam (70% of component) and 1 aural exam (30% of component) – ILOs 1 & 2

2 x 300-word report/reflection (TB1 and TB2, pass/fail) – ILO 5

Reading and References

Selection of dedicated material prepared in-house (SML). Grammar texts and dictionaries as appropriate to language area.
