Description

This unit is designed for non-native-speakers of English who have met the University's minimum English language entry requirements and wish to develop their English language skills further for academic purposes. The four main language skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking are practised in an integrated way for the purposes of academic study. Learners also analyse academic texts and consider what is involved in communicating within an academic community. Listening and speaking practice are combined in the delivery of academic oral presentations and participation in simulated seminar discussions. Throughout the unit, a balance between fluency and accuracy is sought. In character with an in-sessional programme, learners' current academic work within their disciplines is used as a resource whenever possible.
