Description

This Unit provides students with an understanding of the care, management and handling of major species of veterinary importance. At the end of the unit the students should demonstrate an acceptable level of understanding of the structure, operation and welfare of major livestock production industries and be familiar with the management, welfare and needs of companion animal species.

Intended learning outcomes

At the end of the unit students will have a theoretical understanding of the care, management and handling of major species of veterinary importance, and the practical ability to safely and effectively handle these species.

Assessment Details

Midsessional: 30 minute MCQ type exam - 10%

End of unit: 30 minute MCQ type exam - 30%

40 minute Short Answer exam - 40%

Practical examination - must pass prior to entry into BVSc3

Term 2: “Welfare” Directed Self Education (DSE) assessed on a written and oral presentation - 10%.

Term 3: “Sheep” Directed Self Education (DSE) assessed on a written report - 10%

Note: Students will be provided with more information about the practical examination and the DSE tasks in the unit handbook and / or by the unit organiser at the start of the academic year.
