This unit will introduce the fundamental aspects of nanomaterials in terms of materials properties, characterisation, processing, modelling and engineering applications.

Intended learning outcomes

  • Understand what nanomaterials are and their unique properties.
  • Be able to associate particular set of nanocomposite materials with their characterisation and manufacturing techniques and provide appraisal and critique of those same techniques.
  • Be able to understand the principles of nanomechanics, limits of materials continuum theory and their relationship with atomistic models (total energy and classical mechanics-based).
  • Be able to appreciate technological and industrial applications associated with nanomaterials in different fields (energy, mechanics, tribology and biomedical).

Teaching details

Teaching will be delivered through a combination of synchronous and asynchronous sessions, including lectures, practical activities supported by drop-in sessions, problem sheets and self-directed exercises.

Assessment Details

Nano materials engineering assignment (100%): Research for and preparation of a report on a specific topic in nanocomposites. Report will include a critical review and analysis of experimental data from open literature related to the topic. This will cover all the unit ILOs.
