Description

This unit provide students with opportunities to acquire skills of designing composite products and their manufacturing processes. The lectures and practical sessions will provide comprehensive knowledge of design principles and intellectual property required for general product development processes as well as the core knowledge of composites processing, process simulations, manufacturing, tooling, and computer-aided design.

Intended learning outcomes

On successful completion of the unit, students will be able to:

  1. Design a new composite product considering its functional requirements, and assess the intellectual property and the market potential.
  2. Apply engineering judgement in selection of appropriate manufacturing methods, and assess and predict risk of defect occurrence in various processing solutions.
  3. Analyse and model the basic manufacturing processes, and optimise process parameters through numerical simulations.
  4. Build a digital mock-up model using a computer-aided design tool.

Teaching details

The unit will comprise lectures, and computer labs. The computer lab sessions will be supported by Teaching Assistants to help the student to complete the tutorial materials.

Assessment Details

Product development plan report (100%) – Each student will write a product development proposal that addresses the conceptual design, market potential, material selection, tooling design, and manufacturing processes with help of CAD and process simulation tools. The technical depth of their product development proposals will be assessed in detail. The assessment will focus mainly on justification of their engineering decision making. (ILOs 1-4).

Resources

If this unit has a Resource List, you will normally find a link to it in the Blackboard area for the unit. Sometimes there will be a separate link for each weekly topic.

If you are unable to access a list through Blackboard, you can also find it via the Resource Lists homepage. Search for the list by the unit name or code (e.g. AENGM0052).
