This unit is part of a programme which aims to:

  • provide a higher degree in orthodontics for dental graduates;
  • prepare students for the Membership in Orthodontics (MOrth) at one of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons.

Intended learning outcomes

  1. Provide students with a theoretical grounding in the scientific basics of cell and molecular biology along with genetics associated with growth of the craniofacial complex.
  2. Provide students with the principles of orthodontic treatment and treatment planning - Part I Basic Orthodontic Clinical Practice
  3. Provide students with the principles and clinical skills relevant to orthodontic practice
  4. Provide students with the theory of clinical science and research methods
  5. Provide students with practical understanding of the scientific basis of growth of the craniofacial complex
  6. Provide students with the principles of orthodontic treatment and treatment planning - Part II Advanced Orthodontic Clinical Practice
  7. Provide students with the principles and clinical skills relevant to orthodontic practice - Part II Advanced Orthodontic Clinical Practice
  8. Describe, critique and discuss current concepts around the biology of craniofacial growth and development, both normal and abnormal
  9. Describe the technical, laboratory and material requirements of contemporary orthodontic practice.
  10. Describe and discuss the assessment of normal craniofacial and somatic growth and development, along with treatment options and modalities of relevance to clinical orthodontic practice.
  11. Describe, assess and discuss normal and abnormal dento facial development, including psychological development and possible TMD
  12. Analyse experimental results, critique and apply to clinical practice.
  13. Communication skills - written, electronic, oral
  14. Successful use of web-based libraries, search engines, a range of common computer applications, e-mail, Wikis, case presentations, journal clubs.
  15. Appropriate management of time and resources.

Teaching details

  1. Web based VLE - clinical tips videos and audio lectures delivered asynchronously and viewable multiple times.
  2. Guided, Internet-based, independent study for each module using the VLE comprising interactive modules on both the University of Bristol and National BOS web platforms
  3. Weekly small group discussion of VLE modules with internal and external teaching staff.
  4. Regular (usually weekly) case based discussions
  5. Weekly chair side clinical teaching – diagnosis, treatment planning and supervised treatment of patients
  6. Independent research and review of current literature in specialised field
  7. Wiki topic teaching linking topics across modules
  8. Journal club presentation of contemporary articles and cases under treatment

Assessment Details

Summative Assessment:

  • SBA assessment - Term 3 (must pass)
  • Oral Diagnostic Test - Terms 3 (must pass)

Both summative assessments must be passed in order to progress to Year 3. There is no compensation between the assessments.

Formative Assessment:

  • 2 Oral Diagnostic Tests - Terms 1 and 2
  • 2 Case presentations - Term 3
  • 13 Work based assessments – competencies – throughout the year
