Description

The Nanoscience Skills and Training Assignment is a mandatory 40 cp unit as an integral part of the 180 cp MSc programme in Nanoscience and Functional Nanomaterials. As such it will complement the taught material in the Nanoscience and Functional Nanomaterials Lecture Course unit, and the technique-oriented material in the Advanced Tools for Nanoscience unit. This Nanoscience Skills and Training Assignment unit is composed of 2 laboratory-based training projects which will provide a broad training in a range of the necessary skills and techniques needed for practical Nanoscience. This unit is composed of two equally-weighted 20 cp components, one taken in weeks 1-10, and the second in weeks 11-20. The aim of the unit is to provide thorough practical training in a manner that will stimulate innovative approaches to problem-solving and emphasize the skills and training required for interdisciplinary scientific research. Exposure of students to a specific short-term project with an interdisciplinary perspective will allow them to experience not only aspects of the basic science of nanomaterials, but how these might be implemented into new technologies.

Intended learning outcomes

The students will be able to:

  • demonstrate an integrated and contextualised approach to research.
  • demonstrate the practical skills required of a practitioner of Nanoscience, beyond those they are likely to have acquired as undergraduates,
  • demonstrate awareness of how the techniques fit together in addressing practical problems.
  • deliver a clear presentation of their results and the techniques employed to carry our research in Nanoscience

Teaching details

This task-oriented and problem-solving module will take place in research labs alongside PDRAs and students already engaged in PhD research.

Assessment Details

Formative assessment will be given by the supervisors during the course of each Assignment. For each component project of this unit, there will be a checklist pass/fail assessment of the specific Training Objectives, as to whether the student has attained a working knowledge of the techniques/protocols/methods. This will be completed by two academics, one of whom will be from the supervisory team of the project. The mark for the first component project will be assessed by a 1000 word report which will be assessed by two academics (50 % of the assessment for this Unit). The mark for the second component project will be assessed by a 30 minute oral presentation on the work carried out during the project, and which will be assessed by two academics (50 %of the assessment for this Unit).
