Description

An introduction to nonsymmetric loading of beams with open and closed cross-sections; analysis of thin-walled aircraft structures; 2D stress analysis and failure criteria; material structures, properties and processing, and introduction to principles of sustainable manufacture.

Intended learning outcomes

On successful completion of the unit the student will be able to:

  1. Apply the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory to cases involving arbitrary cross-sections (solid or thin-walled, open or closed sections) and arbitrary loading (on-axis or off-axis);
  2. Analyse the torsion and bending of thin-walled light aircraft structures;
  3. Describe and evaluate common manufacturing methods for conventional aircraft structures;
  4. Describe and evaluate common material processing routes and diagnose failures arising from inappropriate processing;
  5. Conduct basic life-cycle analyses on selected industrial scenarios.

Teaching details

Teaching will be delivered through a combination of synchronous and asynchronous sessions, which may include lectures, practical activities supported by drop-in sessions, problem sheets and self-directed exercises.

Assessment Details

2 formative online tests

Summative assessment: 100% Summer timed assessment
