Description

This unit brings together the topics of electrical noise and the theory and practice of analogue filter design. Sources of electrical noise are discussed, and techniques for modelling noise sources and calculating their effects in circuits and systems are introduced. Analogue filters are classified according to type and technology, and the design processes are illustrated for the more popular forms of active and passive realisations.

Intended learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. describe common sources of noise in electronic components
  2. model noisy components and calculate their effects on circuit and system performance
  3. design analogue filters using passive and active circuits
  4. describe the principal features of Butterworth, Chebyshev and Bessel-Thompson filters
  5. specify filter characteristics in normalised low-pass form
  6. design and implement low-pass, high-pass, band-pass and band-stop filters using passive and active circuit configurations.

Teaching details

Teaching will be delivered through a combination of synchronous and asynchronous sessions, including lectures, practical activities supported by drop-in sessions, problem sheets and self-directed exercises.

Assessment Details

Formative: Online Test 1.

Summative: Coursework (Filter Design) (60%) and Exam (May/June) (40%).
