Information and FAQs

The Explorers Club is Bristol University's Hill-walking and hiking club. We run events every week during term time, going to a large variety of places, basically aiming to get out of Bristol and have a good time! For us this means hill-walking and hiking, with the occasional bit of (entirely optional) scrambling thrown in for good measure. Our walks go to some of the nicest places in the UK, taking in a healthy mixture of mountains, hills, plains, woodland and coastline so you'll be sure to find something to your taste, while getting to know a bunch of friendly outdoor-types, enjoying a break from the city and staying healthy at the same time.

Our walks are typically day trips either on a Saturday or Sunday, but a couple of times a term we will also stay at a bunkhouse allowing us to spend an entire weekend somewhere further afield. Wherever we go we always try to offer a variety of walks to choose from, typically ranging from 8 to 25 km in length (daylight permitting!). We cater for all abilities, some people turn up to enjoy a relaxing day in the countryside with a little stroll, and sit in a nice warm pub afterwards. Others like to do a bit more walking, and some of our more hard-core members have managed the Three Peaks Challenge (the highest peaks in the UK inside 24 hours) and Wainwright's Coast-to-Coast walk (over 300 km of superb scenery) during the holidays. Our yearly summer trip is brilliant fun and allows us to get somewhere a bit more exotic in Europe, such as the Alps or the Pyrenees. We like pubs and cafes too and pride ourselves on our social programme, so there's plenty to do even if you don't fancy a walk!

If you've realised that there's more to university than sitting in Bristol all weekend, come and get involved, whatever your level of experience. Read the following pages to find out more detail about the club, or if reading isn't your thing give our term programme and photo gallery to see what we've been up to recently, and what we'll be doing in the near future..
