Composites Perspectives on Automated Composites Manufacturing

Speaker 1: Suong Van Hoa Concordia Centre for Composites Department of Mechanical, Industrial and Aerospace Engineering Concordia University, Montreal.

Talk title: Automated composites manufacturing- Critical issues, challenges and opportunities.

Abstract: Critical issues on the Automated Fibre Placement (AFP) for both thermoset composites and thermoplastic composites will be presented. For thermoset matrix composites, the issue involves the effective and efficient methods for the detection and evaluation of defects. For thermoplastic composites, the issue involves the distortion of the structure during and after the process; and the need to improve interlaminar bond strength. Automated Fibre Placement can also be used to make structures by the technique of 4D printing of composites (4DPC). In 4DPC, the composite layers are laid down on a flat mandrel, having a 2D configuration. Upon curing at high temperature and cooling to room temperature, the structure reconfigures itself into a 3D structure. A few examples of structures with engineering significance will be presented.

Biography: Dr. Suong Van Hoa is a professor in the Department of Mechanical Industrial and Aerospace Engineering at Concordia University. He also served as chair of the Department from 1994 till 2000, and again from 2003 till 2006. He formed the Concordia Center for Composites in 1993, and he has been its director since then until now. He conceived and formed the Canadian Association for Composite Structures and Materials (CACSMA) in 1988. He was its president from 1988 till 1989, and again from 1999 until 2014.

Dr. Hoa has been working on composites since 1979. He has worked on various aspects of composites spanning from Material Characterization, Testing, Finite element analysis of composite structures, Development of new materials, Nanocomposites to Design and Manufacturing. From 2012, he has been working on Automated Composites Manufacturing, and since 2016, he has pioneered the topic of 4D printing of composites, of which he will talk about today.
Dr. Hoa is a member of the Canadian Academy of Engineering. He is a life member and World Fellow of the International Committee on Composite Materials. He is also fellow of many learned societies such as the American society of Mechanical Engineers, American Society for Composites, Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Institute of Canada, and Canada Composites Fellow. He has received many awards including the Synergy award from the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada.
