Money advice and debt counselling

The first money advice service, offering debt counselling and case work to individuals in debt, was set up by Birmingham Settlement in the early 1970s. Since then a large number of services have been established across the country using a variety of methods to help those with financial problems.

This report provides an assessment of the provision of money advice and debt counselling in Britain in the mid-1990s. It draws together information on the scope and nature of provision, looks at the resources and support available to those providing money advice and evaluates the most effective and efficient methods of delivering the service.
