Sporting achievements in powerlifting and fencing
8 August 2008
Three members of the University’s High Performance Squad, which aims to help talented student athletes continue with their sporting careers without compromising their academic progress, have won events competing at national level.
Francesco Egro, a fourth-year medical student, and Naomi Taylor, a second-year dentistry student, represented England in the 5 Nations fencing tournament. The tournament is a team event incorporating the 5 nations: England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Francesco won both foil and sabre events, with Naomi winning the epee event.
Josh Hill, a third-year medical student, competed in the British Junior (Under 23) Powerlifting championships. Powerlifting is a strength sport, consisting of three events: the squat, the bench press, and the deadlift. He won and broke the British record (Under 100 kg category), lifting a total weight of 835 kg. Josh is now the British Junior champion and aims to represent Great Britain in Florida later this year.
