Picasso, Chagall and Matisse at The Bristol Gallery
Press release issued: 3 December 2009
A spectacular three-week-only Christmas exhibition celebrating the work of three great artists of the twentieth century, Picasso, Chagall and Matisse, opens at the Bristol Gallery on Saturday 5 December. The exhibition has been researched by three students from the Department of History of Art: Holly Lopez, Cicely Robinson and Natalie Taylor.
Long regarded as the three titans of line, form and colour, Picasso (1881 – 1973), Chagall (1887-1985) and Matisse (1869-1954) shaped the history of modern art in the twentieth century with their explosive handling of paint, line and colour in the production of masterworks of abstract modernism.
“When Matisse dies, Chagall will be the only painter left who understands what colour really is,” claimed Picasso in 1964. The last major UK pairing of Matisse and Picasso was Tate Modern’s magnificent 2002 international touring exhibition that focused on the intricate and tense relationship of mutual brinkmanship and ultimate respect that shaped the creative ambitions of these two larger-than-life characters. Almost a decade later, The Bristol Gallery is proud to introduce Chagall into the mix, recognised by both Matisse and Picasso as one of the few true colourists of equal stature.
Matisse, Picasso and Chagall at The Bristol Gallery is probably the most extensive exhibition of major works of modernism by these celebrated modern masters ever to be staged in Bristol and the South West. Between them they developed some of the most significant advances in twentieth century art.
The Bristol Gallery in conjunction with Goldmark Gallery is delighted to present this spectacular collection of classics of the European avant-garde in Bristol. Over 90 affordable, original, signed and limited edition artworks will be available over the Christmas period for three weeks only, from Saturday 5 December to Wednesday 23 December 2009.
