Four students from the School of Sociology, Politics and International Studies (SPIAS) have been accepted to give papers at the Tomorrow's Ideas, Now (TIN) International Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Conference, which will convene on the campus of the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada, from 16 to 18 August 2012.
SPIAS students Luke de Noronha, Lizzie Packham, Alice Peck and Mara Ruse were among some 80 applicants for this international
event, at which two Bristol students gave papers
last year, so their success is a notable competitive achievement. This initiative came about as a result of co-operation between Bristol University’s
Institute for Advanced Studies (IAS) and its equivalent at Alberta, the
Kule Institute for Advanced Studies, and the students will be co-funded accordingly.
The Director of the Bristol IAS, Professor Gregor McLennan, said: 'This is great news; our students have done very well. The IAS is normally associated with events and funding involving only high-powered senior staff, but over the past couple of years we have been seeking ways to bring in and support not only postgraduate students, but undergraduates too. What the Alberta success signals is that undergraduate studies at Bristol involves an important research/ideas element in the shape of dissertation projects and general level of debate. The IAS is delighted to help flag that up, not only internally, but internationally.'
