An opportunity to be part of the University of Bristol Council

Press release issued: 14 August 2012

Members of the public are being encouraged to help shape the future of one of the UK's leading universities.

A governing body of 32 members make up the University of Bristol's Council, a group which contributes to the prestigious University's strategic direction.

Some 19 of these members are people external to the organisation, bringing a wealth of knowledge and expertise to Council discussions in a role which is similar to that of non-executive directors of companies.

The University is looking to recruit one new ‘lay’ member to join its Council for a three year term from 1 January, 2013. They are required to devote 15 to 20 days of their time to this role each year.

Ideally, the candidate would have skills and experience in graduate careers and recruitment, preferably in a large global business.

Denis Burn, Chair of the University's Council, said: “Being a member of Council is a highly rewarding opportunity to contribute to the trajectory of one of the best universities in the country. Bristol is proud of its rich heritage and its position as a leading global research-intensive university. Anyone who feels they have the necessary skills would be very welcome to apply.

“We are looking for someone who has the ability to work as part of a team and to constructively challenge others within a governing body environment. Ideally, they will also have the skills required to analyse complex issues, and exercise reasoned judgments. Strong networking and communication skills are essential and an understanding of corporate governance principles would be useful.”

The post is not remunerated but the University will pay travel expenses including reasonable child care costs and are considerate of carers’ responsibilities. The University will provide a comprehensive induction in addition to a training and support programme.

The closing date for applications is 5pm on Friday, 28 September. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend interviews between 15 and 17 October.
