Brett Marshbanks, MSc Policy Research

After completing the MSc in Policy Research, I began a new role managing and implementing technological change in higher education. I now lead a team which implements both policy and technical changes to provide appropriate technological solutions to academics and students at the University of Bristol. The skills I obtained in this programme have been key to my success.

The MSc in Policy research taught me to derive evidence from quantitative and qualitative methodologies to inform decisions when effecting change.  Additionally, modern techniques taught during this program emphasize the value of including the demographic you are considering in projects. In my case, this means when planning and completing projects we include both those completing the work and those affected by it, to ensure a complete understanding of all stakeholders’ perspectives and needs.

The structure of this course appealed to me most as it was flexible enough to fit with both my work schedule and my interests. I completed the programme as a full-time student in one year while working part time. Being able to choose optional units which I found compelling helped keep me motivated throughout. It was challenging and rigorous but also incredibly rewarding. The level of support and guidance available throughout the programme was outstanding and allowed me to make the most of my learning.

No matter your profession or expertise, this programme challenges you to take careful consideration of the impact and consequences created by changes within a system or organization. The skills learned throughout this programme enable you to critically analyze relevant evidence and testimonials to understand how different changes will result in different outcomes.
