Jake Barwood, BSc Social Policy with Quantitative Research Methods

(transcribed from a video interview)

I studied Sociology and Law at A Level and I realised that I was passionate about trying to make a difference and helping people. I was interested learning more about poverty, social exclusion and what lead us to where we are now (the history of the Welfare State).

When I found the social policy course at Bristol, it tied all these things together.

Social policy involves the study of all areas of society and I focused on health, education, migration and drugs policy, to name a few units. The course was very current and looked at what is going on in the world and what we can do to try and be part of the solution to some of the problems that we face.

It just seemed like a real family; we were a small group of students with very passionate tutors and it felt like there was a real buzz around the place.

I would absolutely recommend doing Social Policy at Bristol. It’s got the right kind of balance between the theoretical perspective and up to date policy.

Since graduating, Jake works as a Food Partner Support Officer with FairShare, a charity dedicated to fighting hunger and tackling food waste.
