School Direct

School Direct is a national Initial Teacher Training programme in which primary and secondary schools recruit their own student teachers, in conjunction with their associated Higher Education Institution (HEI).

What is School Direct?

Successful completion of a School Direct programme will lead to recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). The School Direct programme at the University of Bristol may also include the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).

In order to help tailor training to your skills and experience, there are two separate School Direct training options:

  1. Tuition Fee: School Direct Training Programme is available to high-quality graduates. You may be eligible for a bursary of up to £25,000 to support you while you train.
  2. Salaried: School Direct Training Programme is an employment-based route available to high-quality graduates with normally at least three years’ work experience who will earn a salary.

The University of Bristol began offering the Tuition Fee School Direct Training Programme with partnership schools from 2012/13. We are pleased to be working with The North Somerset Teaching AllianceThe Castle Consortium , Bristol Redcliffe Open Interchange and Excalibur. Details of the recruitment process are available on the Department of Education website.

Structure of the School Direct Training Programme

In collaboration with partnership schools we offer a one year full-time programme which runs from September to July. School Direct student teachers become members of both the University of Bristol student community and their school community.

Student teachers in the School Direct Partnership work alongside University of Bristol student teachers. Teaching is provided in an integrated fashion, by both University- and School-based staff. Teaching and mentoring take place both in school and at the University. Student teachers on the School Direct PGCE programme will also gain additional experience, tailored to the context of the school.

Assessment and assignments for School Direct student teachers are the same as those followed by PGCE student teachers, and as a result, School Direct student teachers are awarded the PGCE and QTS on successful completion of the programme
