Biography

Paul is a multi-disciplinary Research Fellow based in the Department of Computer Science, University of Bristol. His broad research interests span three main areas, sustainability/sustainable development, applications of Information & Communications Technologies (ICT) and education.

Within Sympact Paul’s foci are on understanding methodological  issues in assessing the energy and greenhouse gas impacts of the digital news media lifecycle, modelling the business context and user behaviour. Paul is also an advisor and analyst on the Greening Events project which is funded under the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC), Greening ICT Programme based in the University’s operational Sustainability Unit and Institute for Learning and Research Technologies (ILRT).

Paul was previously Senior Research Scientist Hewlett Packard Labs, Bristol, where we was a member of both Sustainable IT Ecosystems Lab (SIEL) and Semantic and Adaptive Systems Department. While in SIEL a primary focus was working in collaboration with WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) to help develop methodologies for assessing the net effects of ICT solutions designed to reduce negative environmental and other sustainability impacts of human activities. During this period he was HP’s representative on the WRI/WBCSD Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Product & Supply Chain Protocol technical Working Group on Data & Quantification.

In addition to his work at University of Bristol he is a senior technical consultant with Epimorphics a small Linked Open Data (LOD) focused company based in Portishead just outside Bristol. His work there has included work on the Earthster project (Environmental Life Cycle Assessment initiative) and a Technology Strategy Board (TSB) funded project on potential of Linked Open Data (LOD) in the context of community information systems, Community Insight.
