The IAS workshops gave us the opportunity to bring together researchers from different faculties across the university, with a shared interest in space science. Having a series of workshops allowed us to get to know each other, build a network and set up collaborations.

Global Islam

I should like to say that I give the IAS enormous importance. My work is inter-disciplinary and international at the same time, and the IAS has been instrumental in enabling me to begin to put together research groups that will look at issues pertaining to it. I think that it is reasonable to suppose that such research grants built around our activities will come in also in the future. Ideally, of course, these will be large, but even the small-medium grants that I have obtained so far (such as the ESRC award for £80,000, and the BA conference grant of £2,700) could not have been possible without the constant support of the IAS.

Ideas and Universities

The IAS at Princeton has asked me to apply for a fellowship there in 2009-10.  The School of Social Sciences is running a year-long seminar on education and democracy. They want me to be 'the historian' on the team and to offer long-term perspectives on contemporary issues in education.  if it comes off, it will give me the opportunity to expand Ideas and Universities.  With your permission, and given that Ideas and Universities is a Bristol IAS project, it might also offer us some opportunities to build links between their IAS and ours. I thought you would like to know how one of your IAS projects is being noticed.

Learning on the Move

The workshops have enabled me to network across departments both within Bristol University and across other sectors locally and across UK. We have had speakers from schools locally and in the Midlands and from other HE institutions across UK and Eire, from departments that range from Art and Design to Computer Science. Having administrative support has enabled us to keep the associated website together; the Events page records discussions made at each workshop. Through the series I have firmed up links with medical education and LTSS where we share a common interest in supporting work placement based learning. We have received £15k from JISC to continue the IAS workshop sequence on mobile learning with a special series designed to produce scenarios for publication on the impact of mobile and pervasive devices within HE and FE.
