Aspiring to Manage
(previously 'Aspiring Managers')
For any individuals looking to develop management skills in order to move into a people management role in future.​

Management Essentials
(previously 'First Line Managers')
For grades G, H, I and J who are new to their people management role and/or have not previously received any structured management training.​

Exploring Leadership
(previously 'Middle Level Managers')
For grades K and L, who currently manage/lead a team and/or are responsible for delivering a service.​

Leadership and Management Short Courses

Due to high demand, we have scheduled an additional date for:

Foundations of People Management (Grades G-J)
Date: 14th October
Time: 09.30-16.30
Practical and pragmatic, this full-day course offers realistic approaches for managing people and relationships in the professional services environment. All the approaches offered can be applied to manage upwards, sideways and diagonally as well as downwards and are suitable whether you have official 'management' responsibility or not. These approaches balance improving working relationships and increasing productivity.

Please note the short courses for 2015/16 are coming to a close. We will launch new short course dates for 2016/17 at the end of the summer.

Professional skills development workshops

Women's Self Defence Level 1 and Level 2 Workshops
Date: 4th August and 27th September
Time: 10:30-12:00
Award-winning personal safety workshops designed to empower you in your pursuit to overcome a perceived harmful event, attack or threat to survival. Please visit the website to book your place.

Men's Self Defence (Level 1) Workshop
Date: 18th August
Time: 10:30-12:00
Award-winning personal safety workshops designed to empower you in your pursuit to overcome a perceived harmful event, attack or threat to survival. Open to any male member of staff.

Managing yourself and your time
Date: 4th October
Time: 09:00-17:00
In this one day workshop we'll look at traditional tools and techniques to manage yourself and your time, but we'll also explore some associated issues that can create time management problems, for example, procrastination.

Presentation skills - giving confident presentations
Date: 13th and 20th October
Time: 09:00-17:00 (2 x 1 day workshops, one week apart)
In this practical workshop we will look at how to prepare and structure your presentation, engage with your audience, use visual aids effectively, and how to control your nerves to increase your confidence. You will have two opportunities to practice your skills and to receive constructive feedback to help you enhance your presentations

Collaborative working
Date: 25th October
Time: 09:00-13:00
This workshop focuses on how we can manage relationships in a positive way by looking at collaborative thinking and action in relation to our communication skills, approaches to problem solving, and how we make decisions.

Be a better internal candidate for jobs
Date: 2nd November and 20th December
Time: 09:00-17:00
The workshop will cover – assessing your skills and personal qualities, matching to job descriptions and person specifications, providing evidence of experience, writing your application, preparing for interview, and controlling interview nerves.

Introduction to assertiveness
Date: 10th November & 17th November
Time: 09:00-13:00
This practical workshop focuses on developing an understanding of the difference between assertive, non-assertive, passive/aggressive and aggressive behaviour, and the potential impact of each of these behaviours on our working relationships.

How to work with people whose behaviour you find 'difficult'
Date: 15th November
Time: 09:00-17:00
This workshop focuses on developing an understanding of the range of our own and other people's behaviours, recognising how conflict arises, what triggers our reactions, and reviewing the choices we have in our response so that we can avoid conflict and work productively with others.

Influencing Skills
Date: 23rd November
Time: 09:00-13:00
In this interactive workshop we will consider the importance of social skills in effective influence, practise these skills to influence others to achieve an identified objective, and recognise when and how to accept the opinions, values and needs of others to achieve a win/win outcome.

Technicians' Conference 2016: Bristol; Technically brilliant

Audio Visual Training Workshops

The Learning Facilities Management team will be running a number of Audio Visual Training workshops over September. The workshops are designed for academic and support staff who use ‘teaching spaces’ here at the University. It is intended to enable users to become self-sufficient when using these areas and how to secure appropriate support when necessary. Each session will last approximately one hour, followed by an extra hour if people would like to stay to go over anything or ask questions.

IT services provide a range of learning opportunities to help you develop the IT skills that you need for doing your job, research or study.
