E-Bikes

Electrically assisted pedal cycles (e-bikes) have become increasingly popular in recent years and make cycling an even more attractive option for all types of journeys around town or further afield.

Privately owned e-bikes

The University welcomes and encourages the use of e-bikes by both staff and students as a means of reducing private car journeys to and from campus and for the wider benefits of active travel.

The use of e-bikes at the University is subject to the same policies as other bicycles, in particular policies on abandoned bikes and inappropriate parking.

E-bikes may be parked at all cycle parking facilities at the University, subject to the standard terms of use as advertised locally.

E-bikes brought to campus must comply with government regulations on electrically assisted pedal cycles.

Due to a potential fire hazard, staff and students wishing to store or charge e-bike batteries on university premises must refer to the E-bike fire safety: Guidance for staff and students.

Rental or loan e-bikes

Where available from retailers, local councils (e.g. via Travelwest) or bikeshare operators, the use of rental or loan e-bikes is subject to the operators’ terms of use and the same cycle policies that govern the use of other e-bikes and standard pedal cycles at the University.

University fleet e-cargo bikes

Alongside other departmental road vehicles, the University operates a small fleet of e-cargo bikes for use on campus operations and other business journeys.

All the bikes are currently designated for use by specific departments, but some may become more widely available as pool bikes subject to staff training and implementation of a system for managing bookings and key access.
